Alright, let’s shed some light on this shall we?
MH Day is the short form for Menstrual Hygiene Day. It is an annual awareness day on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM). It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 and aims to benefit women and girls worldwide.
So, how does this concern you and why should you care?
Remember our event early this year – EMBA22 Lunch With Friends? (Sure feels like a far memory now, with this rona shenanigans the world is currently dealing with).
The EXCO shared with us some plans for undertaking some CSR initiatives this year and one of the NGOs sent a rep to speak with us that day – PADUP AFRICA (https://padupafrica.org/).
To commemorate this year’s MH Day, our friends at Padup Africa are embarking on a project tagged “COVID-19 HYGEINE AND SENSITIZATION SUPPORT INITIATIVE” from 28th May – 5th June 2020. In addition to sensitizing poor communities and villages outside Abuja, Nigeria about the importance of hygiene in the fight against the corona virus, they will also be providing sanitary pads and other sanitary wares to the girls and women there.
It would interest you to know that more than 80 million Nigerians who live on less than $1.00 a day, are unable to afford regular sanitary pads which cost about $0.97 a pack (2019). If you’re thinking that having a period in Nigeria is expensive, you’re correct!
The EXCO has discussed, and on behalf of the class, we’ve decided to support this initiative with enough funds to cater for 200 girls. Our President, Efosa, has graciously supported this decision by providing 20% of the funds from his personal resources, the other 80% will be from the class purse.
Below is a breakdown of what we will be providing:
- 200 disposable pads (1month) at 350 naira = 70,000Naira
- 200 underwear (pants) at 300 naira= 60,000Naira.
- 200 Eco reusable masks at 250 naira each =50,000Naira
- 200 hand sanitizers at 380 each =76,000Naira.
Total – 256,000Naira Only
We are glad that as a class, EMBA22 is able to help in this small, but significant way.
Later this year, we shall also be helping children and young adults with limb loss regain confidence and improve their lives by providing prosthethic limbs in partnership with The Irede Foundation. Details will come soon but we crave and thank you for your support in advance.
